My Approach

I aim to create a nurturing environment for artists to explore their innate curiosity and creative expression by combining 11 years of hands-on teaching experience with extensive training from top Canadian artistic institutions and teachers (Canada’s National Ballet School, University of Toronto Faculty of Music, Nancy Kilgour, Alex Samaras, Wendy Wright, Christine Duncan.)

I provide instruction and guidance to help artists of all ages and experiences develop their technical skills while remaining flexible to follow their evolving interests—whether across genres or different forms of creative expression. While I am comfortable dissolving disciplinary boundaries, I also hold deep respect for artistic traditions and creative lineages. I invite artists to bring all of their creative influences and inspirations into our sessions, offering skilled interdisciplinary instruction when desired.

Ultimately, my teaching and mentorship prioritize the artist’s relationship with their inner creative source, rather than external objectives. I believe that a balanced approach—between structure and flow—is key to nurturing this connection. While recitals, exams, assignments, and due dates can serve as valuable scaffolding to support creative development, they should enhance the artist’s practice, not become sources of stress or fear that block creative flow and expression.

Cultivating Creative Growth: Seeds of Intention

At LHS, instead of setting rigid goals, we plant seeds of creative intention, which we nurture through regular practice.

Example Seeds of Intention for Public/Community Sharing:

  • Perform at the Larch House Studios year-end recital

  • Publicly release an original artistic creation or interpretation

  • Work toward an RCM exam

  • Perform at an open mic or talent show

  • Audition for an arts program or production

Example Seeds of Intention for Personal/Private Development:

  • Practice 4-5 days per week, most weeks (sticker charts can be great motivation!)

  • Sight-read chord symbols in 4 key signatures

  • Compose 2 original songs

  • Improvise for 10 minutes straight

  • Confidently sing or belt the high notes of favourite songs

  • Set an original poem to music

  • Create a personal songbook of pieces you can confidently play

  • Memorize your favourite classical piece
